Reflections on a Ferrari

It seems strange to me that whilst I am a peaceful Friends Of The Earth supporting, greenie, tree hugging type I also harbour a fascination for Ferraris and performance cars in general but particularly Ferraris. What is that about?

Well my current understanding is this.

  • The attraction is much less about the actual car and rather more about what it represents.
  • As an object it makes absolutely no apologies for its existence – particularly if painted red.
  • A Ferrari simply is. Powerful, purposeful, beautiful/ugly, exclusive, polluting, highly efficient and yet grossly inefficient, abundant yet wasteful.
  • So what? The Ferrari does not give a damn about its brash presence in the material world- love it, hate it, covert it, ignore it, buy it, sell it, cherish it etc. It does not matter, the Ferrari remains a highly emotive object untroubled by the reactions it evokes. It remains true to its purpose.
  • Can I be so openly honest in my daily life?
  • Can I simply be me without any fear of the reactions of others?
  • Can I shine my light without fear of rejection?
  • Can I be sad, angry, or loving, so openly, so fearlessly?
  • Not always, definitely not always…

Perhaps when I truly display my existence as openly as a Ferrari I shall cease to be drawn to them?

It is as ever a work in progress but after all I am brash and egocentric enough to have written this so I must be on the right track?

But then again…
