What Is Abundance Anyway?
21. March 2005
The Oxford English Dictionary defines abundance like so:
• noun 1 a very large quantity. 2 the state of having a very large quantity; plentifulness: vines grew in abundance. 3 the amount of something present in a particular area, volume, or sample.— ORIGIN Latin abundantia, from abundare ‘overflow’
Very soulful eh?
In our western culture of growth and consumption the term abundance is most readily equated with money. We want loads of money so that we can do loads of stuff and buy loads of things. We might also want loads of money so that we appear more attractive and desirable to others that we might wish to view us that way.
I’d like to take it back a step to time. How many times have you thought, heard or said “I’d do that if I had the time” or “I haven’t got time to do that”. Who has all the time? Is their really not enough time?
We organise our time into hours and days but our felt sense of time is much more varied than that. Time drags when we are doing something we dislike and time quickens when we are doing something we love. It is all over too soon.
So experientially it seems we have too much time for things we dislike and not enough for what we like and enjoy. Wouldn’t the reverse be more enjoyable? Of course! So now you say, “If I had loads of money then I’d be free to spend my time enjoying myself.”
Well maybe, but what if you could enjoy yourself right now? How about if you felt the fullness of the time that you have now? In my experience the best way to draw more of what you want is to enjoy what you have already got. Active conscious receiving automatically evokes a feeling of fullness and abundance and it is that felt feeling or vibration that draws more unto itself. You can spiral down into depression or up into joy. You much joy can you take? Surprisingly little most likely.
I’ll use money as an example. Lets say you have £50 pounds in cash but you have bills to the tune of £150.00. You have not got enough money to pay your bills. Bum! You feel down heartened and maybe even a little angry at God, life or the world.
Feeling that way, whilst perfectly understandable, is not going to help pay your bills. Your abundant bills.
How about an opposite approach? See your bills as cheques made payable to you. The people you owe money to are trusting you to pay their bills. They believe you are able to pay them and they have risked supplying you in advance of payment because of that. So not only do you have £50 in cash but you also have £150 in “trust” cheques.
Now think of all the things you could do with your £50. Buy music, food, gifts, books, cinema, tuition, toys etc. etc. or pay off some of your debt.
You do have abundant options at this time even if you cannot pay off all your debt and jet off on a world tour. That really is the point, learning to feel your opportunities within a place of apparent lack. If you are able to maintain a state of feeling full and well then you will also be able to:
- Perceive and receive new sources of income etc.
- Maintain the ongoing discipline to manage your finances better.
- Enjoy living moment by moment.
So what is abundance anyway?
I place it somewhere close to this:- The state of allowing the feelings of the fullness of our being and our plenitude of opportunities fill us.
That is a very powerful and creative state.
