On Gratitude
20. February 2005
Do you feel the warmth of your heart?
Or some gossamer thread of tangible feeling
Stirring inconspicuously in a forgotten realm
Visible perhaps only to those outside of you?
Yet, some vague memory holds sway
Step aside from these idle doodles
And remember gratitude, yes, gratitude.
It seems loss not gain
Surely I lost a little by my reliance on you?
An unnamed void of numbness rests unfelt yet familiar
Now is the day to choose anew
Time again to risk a feeling beyond the reason of the reasonable
I look upon my flesh and feel my life
I look upon my child and feel my joy
I look to the stars and see my light
Feel the space between these shapes
Feel the space between my breaths
The rich fullness of the void
The formless forms awaiting witness
Adding meaning to the known
Little more than that is required
A choice, one or maybe two
The silent recognition of the unfelt
Is the doorway to the richness of feelings
Do you feel the warmth of your heart?
Offering only hope not pain
Is pain but little more than emptiness unseen?
Now gratitude arises with intention
And intention follows the direction of the mind
Do you feel the warmth of your heart?
